The Broyhill Story
In 1926, James Edgar Broyhill borrowed five thousand dollars against his own house to found the Lenoir Chair Company in Lenoir, North Carolina, upholstering chairs in a former blacksmith shop after a local supplier’s factory burned down.
Through the 1930s to the 1970s, the company grew from a single chair shop into one of the largest furniture manufacturers in the United States, running more than twenty North Carolina factories and introducing landmark lines such as Premier in 1957 and Brasilia in 1962.
After a 1980 sale to Interco and later ownership changes through Furniture Brands International and Heritage Home Group, the Broyhill trademark was acquired by Big Lots in 2019, giving the century-old name a new home in stores and online nationwide.
